Natrinema McGenity et al. 1998, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Natrinema pellirubrum McGenity et al. 1998.
Recommended three-letter abbreviation: Nnm. (see the file ¤ "Three-letter code for abbreviations of generic names").
Etymology: N.L. n. natron (arbitrarily derived from the Arabic n. natrun or natron) soda, sodium carbonate; Gr. neut. n. nema, a thread; N.L. neut. n. Natrinema, sodium (-requiring) thread.

Notes:
1 McGenity et al. 1998 write "We propose that Halobacterium salinarium NCIMB 786, Halobacterium trapanicum NCIMB 784 and Halobacterium halobium NCIMB 777 are placed into the new genus Natrinema and, as other halobacteria have the specific epithets "salinar(i)um, "trapanicum" and "halobium", it as been necessary to change these". However, according to Rule 34a, Natrinema pallidum is a new species, not a nomen novum as proposed by McGenity et al. 1998.
2 Strain NCIMB 784, deposited as Halobacterium trapanicum by Formisano (1962) is regarded as synonymous with NCIMB 777.

Etymology: L. gen. n. salaciae, of Salacia, Roman goddess of the sea, wife of Neptune, who presided over the depths of the ocean, referring to the depth of Lake Medee.
