Type species: ¤ Nautella italica Vandecandelaere et al. 2009.
Etymology: L. n. nauta, seaman; L. dim. suff. -ella; N.L. fem. n. Nautella, the small seaman, referring to the marine habitat of this novel bacterial genus.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. italica, from Italy, where this species was first isolated.
