Nitrobacter Winogradsky 1892, genus. (Type genus of the family ¤ Nitrobacteraceae Buchanan 1917 [Approved Lists 1980]).
Type species: ¤ Nitrobacter winogradskyi Winslow et al. 1917 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. n. nitras -atis, nitrate; N.L. pref. nitro-, pertaining to nitrate; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Nitrobacter, nitrate rod.

Etymology: N.L. n. alkali (from Arabic al-qalyi, the ashes of saltwort), soda ash; L. masc. suff. -icus, suffix used with the sense of pertaining to; N.L. masc. adj. alkalicus, intended to mean alkaline.

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. hamburgensis, pertaining to the city of Hamburg, Federal Republic of Germany, where the organism was first isolated.

2 According to Rules 27(3) and 30, this name is not validly published, because the original publication makes reference to the deposit of the type strain in a single recognized culture collection. However, according to the Judicial Opinion 81, Nitrobacter hamburgensis Bock et al. 2001 is considered to be validly published, since deposit in a second culture collection in a different country has been documented.

2 According to Rules 27(3) and 30, Nitrobacter vulgaris Bock et al. 2001 is not validly published because, at the time of publication, the type strain was not deposited in two publicly accessible service collections in different countries [1]. In a Request for an Opinion, Euzéby and Tindall provide a solution whereby this name may be considered to be validly published [2].
