Obesumbacterium Shimwell 1963, genus.
Type species: ¤ Obesumbacterium proteus Shimwell 1963 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: L. neut. adj. obesum, fat; L. neut. n. bacterium, a rod; N.L. neut. n. Obesumbacterium, a fat, rod-shaped bacterium.

Notes:
1 There are two DNA-DNA hybridisation groups (HG) within Obesumbacterium proteus; these are separable by biochemical characters and DNA-DNA hybridisation. The type strain (ATCC 12841 falls in Group 1. Similarly, there are two groups within ¤ Hafnia. The type strain (ATCC 13337= NCTC 8105) falls in Group 1, leaving Group 2 unnamed. However, despite having distinct phenotypic differences, Obesumbacterium proteus group 1 (type strain ATCC 12841 is 75% related to DNA group 1 of Hafnia alvei (though only 52% related to DNA group 2 of Hafnia alvei); these two organisms are thus a single species, ¤ Hafnia alvei. This leaves two separate unnamed groups (Obesumbacterium proteus HG2 and Hafnia alvei HG2) that are not closely related.
In April 2010, Priest and Barker validly publish the name ¤ Shimwellia pseudoproteus for Obesumbacterium proteus HG2 strains.
In July 2010, Huys et al. validly publish the name ¤ Hafnia paralvei for Hafnia alvei HG2 strains.

2 Comparison of the MLST sequences show only 95% similarity between Obesumbacterium proteus HG1 and Hafnia alvei HG1. Priest and Barker therefore recommend that Obesumbacterium proteus HG1 strains retain the name Obesumbacterium proteus until the systematics of the genus ¤ Hafnia have been clarified and the relationships between these bacteria and Hafnia alvei are understood more clearly.

Obesumbacterium proteus (Shimwell and Grimes 1936) Shimwell 1963, species. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) ATCC 12841= CCUG 2078 = CIP 82.93 = DSM 2777 = LMG 3054 = NCIB (now NCIMB) 8771 = VKM B-964.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ233422.
Synonym: "Flavobacterium proteum" (sic) Shimwell and Grimes 1936.
Etymology: L. masc. n. Proteus, the ancient Greek sea-god noted for being able to change his form at will; L. masc. n. proteus, intended to mean one who is able to be pleomorphic.
