Palaeococcus Takai et al. 2000, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Palaeococcus ferrophilus Takai et al. 2000.
Etymology: Gr. adj. palaios, ancient; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Palaeococcus, ancient spherical cell, denoting the ancient lineage of this organism.

Palaeococcus ferrophilus Takai et al. 2000, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) DMJ = ATCC BAA-128 = DSM 13482 = JCM 10417.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB019239.
Etymology: L. n. ferrum, iron; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. masc. adj. ferrophilus, iron-loving, indicating that it requires iron for growth in the absence of sulfur.
