Piscirickettsia Fryer et al. 1992, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Piscirickettsiaceae Fryer and Lannan 2005).
Type species: ¤ Piscirickettsia salmonis Fryer et al. 1992.
Etymology: L. n. piscis, a fish; N.L. fem. n. Rickettsia, a generic name; N.L. fem. n. Piscirickettsia, rickettsia-like organism affecting fish.
Valid publication: FRYER (J.L.), LANNAN (C.N.), GIOVANNONI (S.J.) and WOOD (N.D.): Piscirickettsia salmonis gen. nov., sp. nov., the causative agent of an epizootic disease in salmonid fishes. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1992, 42, 120-126.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) LF-89 = ATCC VR-1361.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: U36941.
Etymology: L. n. salmo -onis, salmon; L. gen. n. salmonis, of salmon, since it was first discovered in salmon.
