Etymology: L. adj. planus, flat; L. neut. n. filum, a thread; N.L. neut. n. Planifilum, a flat thread.

Etymology: L. n. fimetum, a dung-hill and, by extension, compost; L. suff. -cola (from L. n. incola), inhabitant; N.L. n. fimeticola, inhabitant of compost, referring to the habitat of the type strain.
