Etymology: Gr. adj. planktos, roaming, wandering; L. fem. n. talea, a slender staff, a rod; N.L. fem. n. Planktotalea, a planktonic/roaming rod.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. frisia, Frisian, pertaining to Frisia, a coastal region along the south-eastern corner of the North Sea, i.e. the German Bight, from where the organism was obtained.
