Type species: ¤ Pleomorphobacterium xiamenense Yin et al. 2013.
Etymology: Gr. comp. adj. pleon, more; Gr. n. morphê, form, shape; L. neut. n. bacterium, rod or staff and, in biology, a bacterium (so called because the first ones observed were rod-shaped); N.L. neut. n. pleomorphobacterium, a pleomorphic bacterium.

Etymology: N.L. neut. adj. xiamenense, of or belonging to Xiamen, the city where the organism was first isolated.

Note: According to Huang et al. (2017), Pleomorphobacterium xiamenense Yin et al. 2013 is a later heterotypic synonym of Oceanicella actignis Albuquerque et al. 2012 - the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strains had 99.9 % sequence similarity.
