Etymology: Gr. adj. plesios, near, close, neighbouring; Gr. fem. n. kustis, bladder; N.L. fem. n. Plesiocystis, neighbour bladder (to imply the genus is phylogenetically clustered next to the genus Nannocystis on the dendrogram).
