Promicromonospora Krasil'nikov et al. 1961, genus. (Type genus of the family ¤ Promicromonosporaceae Rainey et al. 1997).
Type species: ¤ Promicromonospora citrea Krasil'nikov et al. 1961 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. pref. pro, before, primitive; Gr. adj. mikros, small; Gr. adj. monos, single, solitary; Gr. fem. n. spora, a seed, and in biology a spore; N.L. fem. n. Promicromonospora, the genus name was coined to reflect the combination of traits then thought to be characteristic of the actinomycete form-genera Proactinomyces (the tendency of the mycelium to fragment) and Micromonospora (the formation of single spores on the substrate mycelium).
