Protoarchaea Cavalier-Smith 2002, class. nov.
Type order: ¤ Thermococcales Zillig 1988.
Etymology: Gr. proto, first; Gr. archae-, ancient; N.L. neut. pl. n. Protoarchaea, named Protoarchaea because bacteria have all retained the putatively ancestral archaebacterial phenotype of hyperthermophily, histones and sulphur reduction.
