Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) ATCC 19191= CIP 103373 = DSM 7165 = IFO (now NBRC) 15446 = LMG 10146.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB006766.
Basonym: ¤ Oceanospirillum japonicum (Watanabe 1959) Hylemon et al. 1973 (Approved Lists 1980).
Other synonym: "Spirillum japonicum" Watanabe 1959.
Etymology: N.L. neut. adj. japonicum, pertaining to Japan.
