Type species: ¤ Pyrolobus fumarii Blöchl et al. 1999.
Etymology: Gr. n. pur, fire; L. masc. n. lobus, lobe; N.L. masc. n. Pyrolobus, the “fire lobe” (the hyperthermophilic lobe).

Effective publication: BLÖCHL (E.), RACHEL (R.), BURGGRAF (S.), HAFENBRADL (D.), JANNASCH (H.W.) and STETTER (K.O.): Pyrolobus fumarii, gen. and sp. nov., represents a novel group of archaea, extending the upper temperature limit for life to 113 °C. Extremophiles, 1997, 1, 14-21.

Etymology: L. gen. n. fumarii, of a chimney, referring to its black smoker habitat.
