Type species: ¤ Rhodopila globiformis (Pfennig 1974) Imhoff et al. 1984.

Etymology: Gr. n. rhodon, the rose; L. fem. n. pila, a ball or globe; N.L. fem. n. Rhodopila, red sphere.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) ATCC 35887= DSM 161 = LMG 4312.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: D86513.
Basonym: ¤ Rhodopseudomonas globiformis Pfennig 1974 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: L. n. globus, ball, sphere, globe; L. adj. suffix -formis -is -e (from L. n. forma, figure, shape, appearance), -like, in the shape of; N.L. fem. adj. globiformis, sphere-shaped.
