Type species: ¤ Rochalimaea quintana (Schmincke 1917) Krieg 1961 (Approved Lists 1980).
Synonym: "Rocha-Limae" (sic) Machiavello 1947.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Rochalimaea, named for H. da Rocha-Lima, one of the early investigators of the etiology of rickettsial diseases.

Etymology: N.L. gen. fem. n. elizabethae, of Elizabeth, named after St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton, Massachusetts, where the organism was isolated.

Etymology: N.L. gen. fem. n. henselae, of Hensel, named in honor of Diane M. Hensel, who isolated many of the original strains detected in bacteremic patients from Oklahoma.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. vinsonii, of Vinson, named in honor of J.William Vinson who, with Henry S. Fuller, originally demonstrated that Rochalimaea vinsonii (Bartonella vinsonii subsp. vinsonii) could be grown on blood agar.
