Etymology: L. n. sal salis, salt, salt water, brine; L. masc. suff. -cola (from L. n. incola), an inhabitant; N.L. masc. n. Salicola, an inhabitant of brine.

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. marasensis, pertaining to Maras, a region of the Peruvian Andes, where the first strains were isolated.
