Type species: ¤ Scardovia inopinata (Crociani et al. 1996) Jian and Dong 2002.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Scardovia, named after Vittorio Scardovi, an Italian microbiologist who has made many contributions to our knowledge of bifidobacteria.
Valid publication: JIAN (W.) and DONG (X.): Transfer of Bifidobacterium inopinatum and Bifidobacterium denticolens to Scardovia inopinata gen. nov., comb. nov., and Parascardovia denticolens gen. nov., comb. nov., respectively. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2002, 52, 809-812.

Etymology: N.L. fem. gen. n. wiggsiae, of Wiggs, named in honour of Lois Wiggs, American microbiologist, for her contributions to anaerobic microbiology.
