Etymology: L. n. smaragdus, malachite; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos), grain; N.L. masc. n. Smaragdicoccus, malachite(-coloured) coccus.

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. niigatensis, of or pertaining to the Niigata Prefecture of Japan, the source of the soil from which the organism was isolated.
