Type species: ¤ Smithella propionica Liu et al. 1999.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Smithella, named for Paul H. Smith in honor of his many contributions to the understanding of methanogenic propionate degradation.

Smithella propionica Liu et al. 1999, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) LYP = OCM 661.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AF126282.
Etymology: N.L. n. acidum propionicum, propionic acid; L. fem. suff. -ica, suffix used with the sense of pertaining to; N.L. fem. adj. propionica, pertaining to propionic acid, on which the bacterium grows.
