Type species: ¤ Smithella propionica Liu et al. 1999.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Smithella, named for Paul H. Smith in honor of his many contributions to the understanding of methanogenic propionate degradation.

Etymology: N.L. n. acidum propionicum, propionic acid; L. fem. suff. -ica, suffix used with the sense of pertaining to; N.L. fem. adj. propionica, pertaining to propionic acid, on which the bacterium grows.
