Note: According to Podkopaeva et al. 2009, the type strain of ¤ Spirillum volutans is not currently available. If a strain on which the original description was based cannot be found and if a neotype strain is not proposed [Rule 18c of the Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision)], the authors request that the Judicial Commission places the name ¤ Spirillum volutans Ehrenberg 1832 (Approved List 1980) on the list of rejected names and designates Spirillum winogradskii Podkopaeva et al. 2009 as a novel type species. The authors also suggest that the description of ¤ Spirillum winogradskii Podkopaeva et al. 2009 becomes the description of the genus Spirillum Ehrenberg 1832 (Approved Lists 1980) emend.
