Type species: ¤ Sporotomaculum hydroxybenzoicum Brauman et al. 1998.
Etymology: N.L. n. spora (from Gr. n. spora, seed), spore; L. n. tomaculum, sausage; N.L. neut. n. Sporotomaculum, a spore forming sausage-shaped organism.

Etymology: N.L. neut. adj. hydroxybenzoicum, referring to hydroxybenzoic acid which is used as sole carbon and energy source.

Etymology: Gr. adj. suntrophos, having grown up with one; L. neut. suff. -icum, suffix used with the sense of pertaining to; N.L. neut. adj. syntrophicum, pertaining to syntrophic substrate utilization.
