Type species: ¤ Stanierella latercula (Lewin 1969) Nedashkovskaya et al. 2005.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Stanierella, named in honour of the famous Canadian microbiologist Roger Y. Stanier (1916-1982), for his important contributions to the development of marine microbiology and the taxonomy of the Cytophaga-like bacteria.

Note: Nedashkovskaya et al. 2006 propose to transfer ¤ Stanierella latercula (Lewin 1969) Nedashkovskaya et al. 2005 (the type species of the genus Stanierella) to the genus ¤ Aquimarina as ¤ Aquimarina latercula (Lewin 1969) Nedashkovskaya et al. 2006, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Stanierella to ¤ Aquimarina.

Basonym: ¤ Cytophaga latercula Lewin 1969 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: L. masc. dim. n. laterculus, a small brick; N.L. fem. adj. latercula, brick-like, brick-red colour.
