Type genus: ¤ Sulfolobus Brock et al. 1972 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Sulfolobus, type genus of the family; L. suff. -aceae, ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Sulfolobaceae, the Sulfolobus family.
