Type genus: ¤ Sulfolobus Brock et al. 1972 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Sulfolobus, type genus of the order; suff. -ales, ending denoting an order; N.L. fem. pl. n. Sulfolobales, the Sulfolobus order.
