Type species: ¤ Sulfurihydrogenibium subterraneum Takai et al. 2003.
Etymology: L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. n. hydrogenum (from Gr. n. hudôr, water; and Gr. v. gennaô, to produce), hydrogen (that which produces water, so called because it forms water when exposed to oxygen); Gr. masc. n. bios, life; N.L. neut. (sic) n. Sulfurihydrogenibium (sic), sulfur- and hydrogen-eating life.

Etymology: N.L. masc. gen. n. kristjanssonii, of Kristjansson, in honour of Jakob Kristjansson for his long-term commitment to the description and exploration of thermophile biodiversity in Iceland, which includes some of the first work done on the Aquificales.
