Type species: ¤ Syntrophococcus sucromutans Krumholz and Bryant 1986.
Etymology: Gr. prep. sun, together with; Gr. n. trophos, feeder, rearer; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos), a grain, berry; N.L. masc. n. Syntrophococcus, coccus which feeds together with (another species).
