Syntrophospora Zhao et al. 1990, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Syntrophospora bryantii (Stieb and Schink 1985) Zhao et al. 1990.
Etymology: Gr. prep. sun, in company with, together with; Gr. n. trophos, one who feeds; N.L. n. spora (from Gr. spora, a seed), a spore; N.L. fem. n. Syntrophospora, a spore former which feeds together with (another species).

→ ¤ Syntrophomonas McInerney et al. 1982.
Note: Wu et al. 2006 propose to transfer ¤ Syntrophospora bryantii (Stieb and Schink 1985) Zhao et al. 1990 (the type species of the genus Syntrophospora) to the genus ¤ Syntrophomonas as ¤ Syntrophomonas bryantii (Stieb and Schink 1985) Wu et al. 2006, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal should change the name Syntrophospora to ¤ Syntrophomonas. However, Syntrophomonas bryantii (Stieb and Schink 1985) Wu et al. 2006 is not validly published [see ¤ Syntrophomonas bryantii (Stieb and Schink 1985) Wu et al. 2006, comb. nov.].

Syntrophospora bryantii (Stieb and Schink 1985) Zhao et al. 1990, comb. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) CuCal = DSM 3014A (co-culture with Desulfovibrio sp., E70) = DSM 3014B (co-culture with Methanospirillum hungatei, strain M1h).
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: not found.
Basonym: ¤ Clostridium bryantii Stieb and Schink 1985.
Etymology: N.L. gen. n. bryantii, of Bryant, named after Marvin P. Bryant, who pioneered studies on syntrophic methanogenic associations.
