Type species: ¤ Thermolithobacter ferrireducens Sokolova et al. 2007.
Etymology: Gr. adj. thermos, hot; Gr. n. lithos, stone; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Thermolithobacter, thermophilic lithotrophically growing rods.

Etymology: L. n. ferrum, iron; L. part. adj. reducens, leading back, bringing back, and in the chemistry converting to a different state; N.L. part. adj. ferrireducens, reducing iron (III).
