Etymology: Gr. adj. thermos, hot; L. fem. n. sphaera, sphere; N.L. fem. n. Thermosphaera, the hot sphere.

Thermosphaera aggregans Huber et al. 1998, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)

Etymology: L. part. adj. aggregans, attaching one's self to, adhering, referring to the ability of the cells to form grapelike aggregates.
