Thermotoga Stetter and Huber 1986, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Thermotogales Reysenbach 2002; type genus of the family ¤ Thermotogaceae Reysenbach 2002).
Type species: ¤ Thermotoga maritima Stetter and Huber 1986.
Etymology: Gr. fem. n. thermê, heat; L. fem. n. toga, Roman outer garment; N.L. fem. n. Thermotoga, the hot outer garment.
