Etymology: Gr. fem. n. thermê, heat; L. fem. n. virga, rod; N.L. fem. n. Thermovirga, the hot rod.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) Cas60314 = ATCC BAA-1197 = DSM 17291.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: DQ071273, CP003096 (complete genome).
Etymology: N.L. gen. n. lienii, of Lien, named in honour of the Norwegian microbiologist Professor Torleiv Lien, for his important contribution in the study of anaerobes from petroleum reservoirs.
