Thioalkalicoccus Bryantseva et al. 2000, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Thioalkalicoccus limnaeus Bryantseva et al. 2000.
Recommended three-letter abbreviation: Tac. (see the file ¤ "Three-letter code for abbreviations of generic names").
Etymology: Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; N.L. n. alkali (from Arabic article al, the; Arabic n. qaliy, ashes of saltwort), soda; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus, sphere; N.L. masc. n. Thioalkalicoccus, sulfur sphere from soda.

Note: The original spelling, Thioalkalicoccus, was corrected to Thialkalicoccus by the List Editor of the IJSEM [1]. However, during the meeting of the Judicial Commission held during the Xth International (IUMS) Congress of Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology [2], H.G. Trüper proposed that the recommendations governing the use of the connecting vowel should be overruled by the usage in chemistry and physics. Consequently, in combined names, which include terms used in chemistry or physics the connecting vowel shall not be dropped when the following component starts with a vowel and when this may cause ambiguity or uncertainty in meaning [2]. The Judicial Commission unanimously agreed to this proposal [2] and the original spelling, Thioalkalicoccus, must be used.

Thioalkalicoccus limnaeus Bryantseva et al. 2000, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)

Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ277023.
Etymology: Gr. n. limnê, lake, pond, swamp; Gr. adj. limnaios, of or from the marsh; N.L. masc. adj. limnaeus, living in lakes and swamps.

2 In the paper by Bryantseva et al. 2000, the type strain is erroneously cited as ATCC BAA32 (without dash). The current number assigning system of the ATCC includes three alphabets, followed by a dash then the number. The ATCC website search will not recognize entries without dash!
