Etymology: Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Thiobacter, sulfur rod.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. subterraneus, underground, subterranean, indicating the source of isolation.
