Etymology: L. n. virga, a slender green branch, rod; N.L. neut. n. sporangium (from Gr. n. spora, a seed and in biology a spore; Gr. n. angeion, vessel), sporangium (spore-containing vessel); N.L. neut. n. Virgosporangium, an organism with rodshaped sporangia (spore-containing vessels).
