Type species: ¤ Volcaniella eurihalina Quesada et al. 1990.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Volcaniella, named for B. Elazari- Volcani, the microbiologist who first described halophilic microorganisms from the Dead Sea.

Note: Mellado et al. 1995 propose to transfer ¤ Volcaniella eurihalina Quesada et al. 1990 (the type species of the genus Volcaniella) to the genus ¤ Halomonas as ¤ Halomonas eurihalina (Quesada et al. 1990) Mellado et al. 1995, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Volcaniella to ¤ Halomonas.

Etymology: Gr. adj. eurus, wide, broad; Gr. adj. halinos,of salt; N.L. fem. adj. eurihalina, growing at a wide range of salt concentrations.
