Type species: ¤ Wigglesworthia glossinidia Aksoy 1995.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Wigglesworthia, named after the parasitologist W.B. Wigglesworth.
Valid publication: AKSOY (S.): Wigglesworthia gen. nov. and Wigglesworthia glossinidia sp. nov., taxa consisting of the mycetocyte-associated, primary endosymbionts of tsetse flies. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1995, 45, 848-851.

Wigglesworthia glossinidia Aksoy 1995, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) description (the nomenclatural type is the primary endosymbiont found in the mycetocytes of Glossina morsitans morsitans).

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. glossinidia, referring to Glossina, the genus of tsetse flies.
