Type species: ¤ Xenophilus azovorans Blümel et al. 2001.
Etymology: Gr. adj. xenos, foreign; Gr. masc. n. philos, friend; N.L. masc. n. Xenophilus, friend of foreign compounds, referring to the isolation of the type species by enrichment on azo dyes.
