Etymology: xan.tho.ci.di.ca. Gr. masc. adj. xanthos, yellow; L. v. caedo, to kill; N.L. fem. adj. xanthocidica, pertaining to yellow and to cut, probably referring to the name given the antibiotic produced which, in turn, was probably derived from its activity against Xanthomonas oryzae
