Type species: ¤ Actinosporangium violaceum Krasil'nikov and Yuan 1961 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. n. aktis -inos, ray (used to refer to actinomycetes); N.L. n. sporangium [from Gr. n. spora, a seed (and in biology a spore), and Gr. n. angeion (Latin transliteration angium), vessel], sporangium; N.L. neut. n. Actinosporangium, an actinomyces with sporangium.

→ ¤ Streptomyces Waksman and Henrici 1943 (Approved Lists 1980).
Note: Goodfellow et al. 1986 propose to transfer ¤ Actinosporangium violaceum Krasil'nikov and Yuan 1961 (Approved Lists 1980), the type species of the genus Actinosporangium, to the genus Streptomyces as ¤ Streptomyces paradoxus Goodfellow et al. 1986, nom. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Actinosporangium to ¤ Streptomyces.
