Etymology: L. n. aqua, water; N.L. neut. n. microbium, a microbe; N.L. neut. n. Aquamicrobium, a bacterium living in water (in wastewater).

Etymology: N.L. masc. gen. n. ahrensii, of Ahrens, named after the German microbiologist Dr Alfons Ahrens who isolated and characterized the strains of this species.
