Etymology: N.L. n. azotum [from Fr. n. azote (from Gr. prep. a, not; Gr. n. zôê, life; N.Gr. n. azôê, not sustaining life)], nitrogen; N.L. pref. azo-, pertaining to nitrogen; Gr. n. hudôr, water; Gr. n. monas, a unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Azohydromonas, nitrogen-fixing and hydrogen autotrophic monad.
