Coprothermobacter Rainey and Stackebrandt 1993, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Coprothermobacter proteolyticus (Ollivier et al. 1985) Rainey and Stackebrandt 1993.
Etymology: Gr. n. kopros, excrement, ordure, manure; Gr. adj. thermos, warm; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Coprothermobacter, a thermophilic rod from manure.

Coprothermobacter platensis Etchebehere et al. 1998, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) 3R = DSM 11748.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: Y08935.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. platensis, pertaining to Rio de la Plata, a river between Uruguay and Argentina, the region where the strain was isolated.

Basonym: ¤ Thermobacteroides proteolyticus Ollivier et al. 1985.
Etymology: Gr. n. proteios (from Gr. adj. protos, first), the first quality (protos was used by Gerhard Johan Mulder in 1838 to coin the French n. protéine); N.L. masc. adj. lyticus (from Gr. masc. adj. lutikos), able to loosen, able to dissolve; N.L. masc. adj. proteolyticus, proteolytic.
