Desulfarculus Kuever et al. 2006, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Desulfarculales corrig. Kuever et al. 2006; type genus of the family ¤ Desulfarculaceae Kuever et al. 2006).
Type species: ¤ Desulfarculus baarsii (Widdel 1981) Kuever et al. 2006.
Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. masc. n. arculus, a small bow; N.L. masc. n. Desulfarculus, a bow-shaped sulfate-reducer.

Basonym: ¤ Desulfovibrio baarsii Widdel 1981.
Etymology: N.L. gen. n. baarsii, of Baars, named after J.K. Baars, a Dutch microbiologist, who did the first comprehensive studies on nutrition of sulfate-reducing bacteria.
