Desulfovibrio Kluyver and van Niel 1936, genus. (Type genus of the order ¤ Desulfovibrionales Kuever et al. 2006; type genus of the family ¤ Desulfovibrionaceae Kuever et al. 2006).
Type species: ¤ Desulfovibrio desulfuricans (Beijerinck 1895) Kluyver and van Niel 1936 (Approved Lists 1980).
Synonym: "Sporovibrio" Starkey 1938.
Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; L. v. vibro, to set in tremulous motion, move to and fro, vibrate; N.L. masc. n. vibrio, that which vibrates, and also a bacterial genus name of bacteria possessing a curved rod shape (Vibrio); N.L. masc. n. Desulfovibrio, a vibrio that reduces sulfur compounds.
