Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").

Desulfomonas Moore et al. 1976, genus.
Type species: ¤ Desulfomonas pigra Moore et al. 1976 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating; L. fem. n. monas, unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Desulfomonas, a cell that reduces sulfur compounds.

¤ Desulfovibrio Kluyver and van Niel 1936 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Loubinoux et al. 2002.

Note: Loubinoux et al. 2002 propose to transfer ¤ Desulfomonas pigra Moore et al. 1976 (Approved Lists 1980), the type species of the genus Desulfomonas, to the genus ¤ Desulfovibrio as ¤ Desulfovibrio piger (Moore et al. 1976) Loubinoux et al. 2002, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Desulfomonas to ¤ Desulfovibrio.
