Family Halobacteriaceae
Warning: In the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature, an arrow (→) only indicates the sequence of valid publication of names and does not mean that the last name in the sequence must be used (see: Introduction).
Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").
For a detailed description of this taxon see Bergey’s Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria (BMSAB).
Halobacteriaceae Gibbons 1974, familia.
Type genus: ¤ Halobacterium Elazari-Volcani 1957 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. neut. n. Halobacterium, type genus of the family; suff. -aceae, ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Halobacteriaceae, the Halobacterium family.

Note: P. DasSarma & S. DasSarma 2008 [1], propose to rename the family Halobacteriaceae as "Haloarchaeaceae", to reflect its membership in the archaeal rather than the bacterial domain. This change is in violation of the General Considerations, Principles and Rules of the International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria [2], and it not validly published.
