Order Halobacteriales
Warning: In the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature, an arrow (→) only indicates the sequence of valid publication of names and does not mean that the last name in the sequence must be used (see: Introduction).
Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").
For a detailed description of this taxon see Bergey’s Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria (BMSAB).
Halobacteriales Grant and Larsen 1989, ord. nov. (Type order of the class ¤ Halomebacteria Cavalier-Smith 2002; type order of the class ¤ Halobacteria Grant et al. 2002).
Type genus: ¤ Halobacterium Elazari-Volcani 1957 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. neut. n. Halobacterium, type genus of the order; suff. -ales, ending denoting an order; N.L. fem. pl. n. Halobacteriales, the Halobacterium order.
Valid publication: Validation List no. 31. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1989, 39, 495-497.
Effective publication: GRANT (W.D.) and LARSEN (H.): Group III. Extremely halophilic archaeobacteria. Order Halobacteriales ord. nov. In: J.T. STALEY, M.P. BRYANT, N. PFENNIG and J.G. HOLT (editors), Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, first edition, vol. 3, The Williams & Wilkins Co., Baltimore, 1989, pp. 2216-2218.

Notes:
1 On the Validation List no. 31, in violation of Rules 15 and 21a, the nomenclatural type is given as Halobacteriaceae Gibbons 1974 (Approved Lists 1980). It should be noted that the correct nomenclatural type is cited in the effective publication.

2 P. DasSarma & S. DasSarma 2008 [1], propose to rename the order Halobacteriales as "Haloarchaeales", to reflect its membership in the archaeal rather than the bacterial domain. This change is in violation of the General Considerations, Principles and Rules of the International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria [2], and it not validly published.
