Type species: ¤ Kosmotoga olearia DiPippo et al. 2009.
Etymology: Gr. n. kosmos, universe or world; L. fem. n. toga, toga, a Roman outer garment; N.L. fem. n. Kosmotoga, a worldly toga, referring to the placement of the genus within a clade of the Thermotogales whose members appear to inhabit diverse environments such as oil reservoirs, marine sediments and low-temperature bioreactors.

Etymology: L. n. arena, sand; L. adj. corallinus -a -um, coral-red; N.L. fem. adj. arenicorallina, intended to mean belonging to coral sand, as the strain was isolated from a sediment of coral sand.
