Leptospira Noguchi 1917, genus. (Type genus of the family ¤ Leptospiraceae Hovind-Hougen 1979 [Approved Lists 1980]).
Type species: ¤ Leptospira interrogans (Stimson 1907) Wenyon 1926 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. adj. leptos, thin, narrow, fine; L. fem. n. spira, a coil, helix; N.L. fem. n. Leptospira, a thin helix or coil, referring to the morphology of the bacterium.

Etymology: N.L. masc. gen. n. alexanderi, of Alexander, named to honor Dr. A.D. Alexander, an American microbiologist.

Note: Brenner et al. 1999 described five new genomospecies. The name Leptospira alexanderi Brenner et al. 1999 is proposed for Leptospira genomospecies 2. The other new Leptospira genomospecies described by Brenner et al. 1999, were not formally named because they contain only one strain (genomospecies 3, 4 and 5) or two strains (genomospecies 1).
So, Leptospira genomospecies 1, 3, 4 and 5 were not validly published names and their use has become a source of confusion in the literature. Accordingly, the Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Leptospiraceae proposes to name these taxa in order to regularise their taxonomic position. Leptospira genomospecies 1, genomospecies 3, genomospecies 4 and genomospecies 5 are now classified as ¤ Leptospira alstonii Smythe et al. 2013, ¤ Leptospira vanthielii Smythe et al. 2013, ¤ Leptospira terpstrae Smythe et al. 2013, and ¤ Leptospira yanagawae Smythe et al. 2013, respectively.

1 In September 1990, the "Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Leptospira" agreed by a majority vote that strain Ictero No. 1 = ATCC 43782should replace strain RGA as the type strain of Leptopsira interrogans [1, 2]. However, according to Rule 18g, only the Judicial Commission may decide to take action leading to replacement of a type strain [3]. The members of the "Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Leptospira" omitted to request a Judicial Opinion, and the proposal for the replacement of strain RGA by strain Ictero No. 1 is illegitimate.

2 In the 1980 Approved Lists of Bacterial Names [1] and the 1989 Amended Edition of the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names [2], ATCC 23581was listed as the type strain of Leptospira interrogans. The same ATCC number was cited as the type strain in the amended description of Leptospira interrogans by Faine and Stallman [3] and in the first edition of Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology [4]. In 1986, the ATCC was informed by the Centers for Disease Control that ATCC 23581was Leptospira interrogans serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae, serovar Budapest, not serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae as originally deposited. As a result, an authentic culture of Leptospira interrogans serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae RGA strain was submitted and assigned ATCC 43642 This strain was designated as the type strain of Leptospira interrogans in the article by Yasuda et al. [5]. Therefore, in 2004, Landon and Tang propose to list ATCC 43642as the type strain of Leptospira interrogans in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names, and put forward a Request for an Opinion to the Judicial Commission [6]. Opinion pending.
